“OXI” Day 2010 – Athenstyle Hostel

The Ohi day ultimatum, which was presented to Metaxas by the Italian ambassador in Greece, Emanuele Grazzi, on October 28, 1940, at dawn (04:00 am), after a party in the German embassy in Athens, demanded that Greece allow Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified “strategic locations” or otherwise face war. It was allegedly answered with a single laconic word: όχι or no. In response to Metaxas’s refusal, Italian troops stationed in Albania, then an Italian protectorate, attacked the Greek border at 05:30 am. Metaxas’s reply marked the beginning of Greece’s participation in World War II

On the morning of October 28 the Greek population took to the streets, irrespective of political affiliation, shouting ‘ohi’. From 1942, it was celebrated as Ohi Day. During the war, October 28 was commemorated yearly by Greek communities around the world and in Greece and Cyprus, and after World War II it became a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus. The events of 1940 are commemorated every year with military and student parades. On every anniversary, most public buildings and residences are decorated with Greek flags.

Bad Boys of Dance at Badminton Theatre

The Bad Boys of Dance will have you on your feet as they come to Athens, Greece for a performance of “Rock the Ballet” at the Badminton Theater from 10 to 13 November. Direct form New York, the contemporary dance performance full of energy and sensuality, beat music and provocative choreographies has passed like a storm through America, Europe and Australia, mesmerising audiences and drawing triumphant reviews from critics.

Rock the Ballet” is the creation of Rasta Thomas, a classical ballet soloist who decided to shed his tights, forget about Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev and reveal his incomparable talent by dancing to the rock rhythms of U2 or the Black Eyed Peas. With Adrienne Canterna’s signature choreographies and the Bad Boys of Dance on stage, Thomas presents, in his own words, “the ballet of the 21st century,” where the traditional techniques of classical ballet coexist and mix it up with the dynamic and intense moves of modern dance, the difficult and dangerous acrobatics of gymnastics and the rhythmic gyrations of hip hop.

Rock the Ballet” has had 450 sold-out performances since 2008 all over the world, charging more than 250,000 spectators with their energy.

The sexy and fit “bad” boys of Rasta Thomas’ group will be dancing to, among others: “I Gotta a Feeling” – Black Eyed Peas; “With or Without You” – U2; “We Will Rock You” – Queen; “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson; “When Doves Cry” – Prince; “American Woman” – Lenny Kravitz; and “Viva la Vida” – Coldplay.

For the last 28 years, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) organizes yearly, the international Athens Classic Marathon event; a popular mass sport and tourist event, in which thousands of runners from Greece and abroad participate. The Athens Classic Marathon is a unique event, held on the authentic, historical, Olympic Marathon course and will take place on Sunday 31 October 2010. The Athens Classic Marathon race is dedicated to the memory of the Balkan pacifist, Grigoris Lambrakis. The originality of this race, the opportunity a runner has to run the course that was originally run by the ancient Athenian soldier and message bearer and then, by Spyros Louis, the first Olympic Champion in the Marathon event in 1896, attracts more and more runners and simple citizens every year from Greece and all over the world.

Among all the Olympic sport events, the marathon race stands out, as it was born out of a true historic and heroic event. It was a true triumph accomplished by a news-bearing foot soldier from ancient Athens, who announced – with his last words – the victory of the Greeks against the Persians during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

This year, the 2010 Athens Classic Marathon, which will be held on 31 October 2010, coincides with the celebration of the 2,500 years anniversary from the Marathon Battle, honoured throughout the year by the international Marathon and Sport Movement as well as by millions of individual runners and sport fans all around the world.

The actual race will be held on Sunday 31 October 2010, from the city of Marathon to the Panathinaikon Stadium with more than 21,000 runners participating not only in the Marathon Race, but also in the shorter road races of 10km and 5km, held parallel.

In addition to that the Athens Classic Marathon Expo will take place between 28-30 October 2010, at the Zappeion Megaro, focusing on Sports, Tourism and Health. Furthermore, SEGAS (the Hellenic Athletics Federation) will honour the 2,500 years anniversary from the Marathon Battle with a big event to take place outside the Zappeion Megaro on Friday 29 October 2010, at 19.30pm. This worthwhile event is open to the public and it consists of dramatic act, videos, and music. Do not miss it!

“Oracle” Mankind cannot help but to wonder what the future will hold. Such quintessential and universal questions (if not their answers) about human existence are/can be addressed through art. What motivates people? What are the invisible forces that influence and steer them? How can they improve their lives? In this sense, art takes over the role of the Pythia of Delphi. Art asks questions, revolutionizes and shatters mankind’s illusions and perceptions. Art has been able to foresee scientific change.
