Kathari Deftera – Ash or Clean Monday 2017

On Monday, 27th February, the Greek people of Athens will be celebrating ‘Kathari Deftera’, aka Clean Monday, Orthodox Shrove Monday or Ash Monday. It is the first day of Orthodox Christian Great Lent that occurs at the beginning of the 7th week before Easter Sunday. The public holiday will be a day of great celebrations, delicious food and family traditions.

It’s an event to spend with the family where people usually go out in taverns for sea food eating. The food choices for this occasion vary from olives, shrimp, fish, feta cheese, taramosalata (fish roe dip), dry bread and yigandes (baked bean casserole). Octopus grilled over an open flame is a classic Greek meze to serve with ouzo and wine, and a favourite on Clean Monday. (For the less adventurous, fried calamari is a delicious alternative.)

Clean Monday is also considered to mark the first day of spring, Greeks tend to celebrate it with outdoor activities. A favorite place to hang out is Filopappos Hill where you will see many Greek families, young and old, picnicking and flying kites! The hill is situated just opposite the Acropolis and even if you don’t have a kite, the hill offers the most amazing, uninterrupted view of the Acropolis and beyond to Pireaus, Aegina and other neighboring islands (but the kite is highly recommended).

So go out and enjoy this festive event along with your glass of wine and ouzo to the sound of live music provided by the municipality of Athens.

Top 5 – Metro stations in Athens

#AthenStyle #FamousHostels #endlessummer

The city of Athens has one of the newest constructed metro stations in the world. 2 underground lines, and 1 overground. Look for the sign in the following photo, and you’ve reached a stop.

acropolis-metro-station

It connects the one side of the city to the other, with the airport, the port and the train station being three of the most useful points. Of course most of the stops in the center have the historical sights right there, such as the following.

Acropolis

The most historical spot in Greece, and one in the whole world, is located in the center of Athens! A wonderful and easy hike up one of the tallest hills of Athens, which leads you to this grand monument. The Acropolis Museum is also close to the underground exit, a place you should visit without a second thought! And of course this graphic area is full of beautiful cafes and restaurants, a great way to stop and re energize a while so you can continue your explore around this city!

Syntagma

This stop is considered the main point in the center of Athens. The parliament of Greece is located right as you exit the underground. Also the National Gardens, which is worth taking a stroll around, to take a few pictures and admire all the nature in there. And lets not forget that once you cross the Syntagma Square, Ermou street begins. The main shopping street filled with many popular shopping stores where you can find anything you’re looking for!

Thisio

This is one of the best places to have a stroll in Athens. Located between Monastiraki and Acropolis. There is a wonderful outdoor market every day on a pedestrian street that you have to pass by. It begins right at the exit of the metro station so you can’t miss it. Another great area to sit for a meal at one of the traditional restaurants, or a beverage at a cafe.

Keramikos

The party area! This area is full of bars, clubs and restaurants. You might also hear it called Gazi. The best place to go and have a fun night! Note that the night begins around midnight here in Greece. And the clubs start closing easily after 6am at the earliest! This Greek experience will surely make an unforgettable memory to your trip!

Monastiraki

The square where almost all day and all night long, mainly in the summer, you will see people chilling and passing by. It’s the most central area of Athens, with a modern flea market right at the  exit of the metro building. From the square there is a wonderful view of the Acropolis. Very close by is a beautiful area named Psiri, great to walk around and hang out. Also, as noted above, Ermou street ends close to this square, so you can shop in the opposite direction, towards Syntagma.

Here is a helpful map you should have with you with all the Metro stations.

AthenStyle Family Olive Grove

The family of AthenStyle, has owned 103 olive trees for over five generations. Once a year, we produce our own olive oil with the method of the cold press. All the olives that are being used are selected and collected by hand at an early stage of maturation of the olive fruit for additional quality and taste. We produce a limited amount of olive oil but it is still enough for family use and our hostel’s kitchen.  We are excited to share it with you as we believe that just one drop of this special extract is enough to bring all the good memories from Greece back in your mind! A limited amount of 250 bottles have been produced this year for our guests and friends to take away and enjoy a taste of Greece and AthenStyle while they are back home. If you have tried it and you would like some more do not hesitate to get in touch with us by sending an email at info@athenstyle.com.

The olive yard is located in Kalamata where famous Kalamata olives are produced as well. You may visit the area and enjoy the original taste of local produce, as well as fresh fish and seafood from the Messinian Gulf and long beaches with crystal clear waters by staying in Kalamata (www.AthenstyleFlats.com). Kalamata is also a good base for day trips to all Peloponnesian historical sites as well as the Mani region. Contac us for more info!

If landing at Athens airport book a cheap stay in Athens best hostel http://www.AthenStyle.com, it’s worth the visit!

Top 5 – Food in Greece

The Greek cuisine is considered one of the best in the world, due to the Mediterranean lifestyle. This country is lucky for its soil because it’s the main part in the world with so many olive trees that give the virgin olive oil. All Greeks use it in the kitchen for pretty much everything they cook!

Upon your visit in Greece, doesn’t matter how long you’re staying, you MUST try the following delicious dishes!

Mousaka

A casserole in the oven with eggplant, potato, minced meat and cream on top. Probably the most traditional dish Greece has!

Pastitsio

Another main casserole dish in the oven made by a type of macaroni of your choice (usually rigatoni), minced meat and cream on top. Delicious!

Gemista

A classic dish of stuffed vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. Filled with rice, chopped potato and other vegetables. In some areas of Greece they also add minced meat. Tasty and healthy!

Salad Choriatiki (Farmers Salad)

The famous Greek salad that combines tomato, cucumber, green pepper, onion, olives and feta cheese all mixed together with virgin olive oil and oregano.

Spanakopita

A pie with the famous Greek filo pastry, with spinach, feta cheese, onion in the filling, all wrapped around and baked in the oven! It’s usually made in a large pan and served in pieces. But for sure for can’t stop at just one piece!

The restaurants in Athens cover the full range of the Greek menu, so the days you’ll spend here are going to leave you and your stomach fully satisfied! AtheStyle is a great place to stay with cheap accomodation and of course to eat at it’s famous Rooftop Bar with it’s killer view of the Acropolis!
