Autumn in Athens

What is the best time to go on vacation in Greece?

It always depends on your personal interests, but autumn is probably the best season to visit Greece. Peak season is over, there are less people, but you can enjoy the views and relax, since the weather is still nice.

Autumn is the best opportunity to explore the Greek history, art and culture.

Greece is not only the islands, which are the main attraction in summer. The sun, the clear blue sea and the nightlife is the reason why people choose to visit Greece in summer.

However, if you come to Greece in autumn, you will avoid summer’s inflated prices, hordes of tourists and high temperatures. You can still enjoy a warm enough sea to swim in and you can visit the mainland which has a rich nature and plenty of archeological sites. You only need to check the ferry and flights timetables as there are fewer off-season. Also, there are lots of festivals. Greece is a true paradise for cultural tourism, a large journey into history and art.

You can enjoy the stunning nature, and empty beaches in a fresh and cool climate with no crowds in sight. There is so much to see and do in Athens – there are so many historic monuments, museums, art galleries, theatres and temples, not to mention the fantastic local food and cosmopolitan nightlife – Athens truly has something for everyone.

If one could possibly ever get bored of this city then you only need to take a bus or train for one or two hours in any direction to be surrounded by beautiful Greek countryside, or in less than a day you can reach any of the famous Greek islands. If you love nature and the outdoors then the autumn and winter are the perfect time to enjoy the countryside around Athens and Greece. The colours are so beautiful and vibrant, the smell of the earth after the rain is wonderful and the air is cool and fresh.

During the winter months, people working in hospitality have much more time to spend socialising with customers – so if you enjoy chatting to the local people when you go out then the winter months may suit you much better. It often feels like a family home rather than just another busy hotel. The whole atmosphere in Athens is much more relaxed in the autumn and winter months and there are certainly still plenty of tourists, travellers and backpackers. Also, every Sunday during the winter most public museums and archaeological sites across Greece are free of admission!!

If you want to explore the stunning nature around Athens and Greece in a cool, fresh climate, visit all the archaeological and historical sites without them being overly crowded, if you’re interested in meeting a variety of helpful, relaxed locals and travellers and backpackers from all over the world, and if you like to travel spontaneously without having to book weeks or months in advance or if you’re travelling on a budget – then you may find that the perfect time to visit Athens and Greece is during the autumn or winter.

Christmas in Athens, 2014

Christmas is finally coming! Athens is putting on its festive mood! ;)

Decorations and preparations in our beautiful city have already started! This year the central square of Athens, Syntagma, is going yo have a really unique piece of art, completely different to previous years. Last year, the decorations were eco-friendly and most of them were made by children and students of Athens’ primary schools, using only recycled material to decorate the trees in the Square in their own way. Continuing a spirit of creativity, this year, we are going back to the Greek traditions! This time, we decided to decorate a boat, which you can see lit up in the middle of the square.

The Christmas boat comes from a tradition in the islands where children used to sing Christmas songs, carrying around small wooden boats illuminating their way and having enough space to store the treats they got. Another tradition is that families used to decorate boats to welcome back the seamen around Christmas time.
On December 10th, everything was everything was ready and at 6pm the Mayor of Athens (Yorgos Kaminis) officially announced the start of the Christmas Celebrations and all the festivities began! It means that every day and night, for one month, you will have the chance to enjoy lots of free shows prepared by hundreds of musicians, actors, dancers and many other artists! There will be street events, concerts, exhibitions, educational programs and a lot more, all aiming to show the multicultural character of Athens. Doesn’t it sound great???
So, come to Athens and enjoy yourselves! Merry Christmas Everybody!!!

Psirri – Hub of Alternative Nightlife & Youth Culture

For those of you who appreciate the best way to get a real feel for a city and what is going on, is by socialising with the locals and getting to know the real modern Athenian cultures and music scenes, then Athenstyle is the only base for you when travelling here!

Psirrii District in Athens

The Hostel is located seconds away from Psirri district, praised online as the up and coming nightlife area in Athens, and certainly for me, the most lively, cosmopolitan and diverse district to party and mingle with the locals. The second you arrive on Miaouli street you are immediately hit by the energy and vibes, the road is packed with people strolling up and down until they hear a sound they like to dance or chilled place to sit down, drink and smoke hookah (The whole street is full of fruity scents from groups of people smoking, some shisha bars being 3 stories of people smoking shisha and chatting all night!)

If you are into rock, reggae, techno, chill out, traditional music, you are sure to find a bar on this street alone, making it the perfect street to bar hop until you find your perfect spot. Working your up to the square, symbolised by a beautiful piece of street art covering the entire side of the building overlooking Miaouli street, the shisha scents make way for that of traditional greek snacks and meals, the square itself full of tables of couples, families and groups of friends enjoying Mousaka, Saganaki, Calamari and endless amounts of baked goods and souvlaki, perfect as a quick snack to line your stomach!

Street Art in Psirrii

As well as a great place to bar-hop, the area is also great for clubbing! From more commercial sounds, to high quality Berlin style techno and house, colourful hippies sat outside of booming psychedelic clubs and even some strange characters heading towards the local Gothic gathering spot for dark sounds and sexually deviant nights! This hugely diverse group of people and interests all together is what I think creates the unique and friendly vibes.

The square has multiple roads leading off from it’s corners, and although Psirri is not the largest area, it’s possible to get lost for hours in it’s winding streets finding cosy hidden bars and clubs you probably won’t be able to find again! which is a truly amazing experience. Filled with incense from the countless hippy head shops, Beautiful people hanging out in trendy wine bars, old people dancing to rock ‘n’ roll, energetic youth spilling out of underground dance clubs…. It is a combination of all of these things and a million more which I feel makes the atmosphere in the area unrivalled in Athens and even great competition for famous nightlife spots all over Europe.

Supernova” exhibition

The exhibition is part of the second festival artistic prints and engravings, Athens Print Fest, organized by the Association of Greek Printmakers.

There is a constant parallelism between printmaking and as we understand the history of this supernova  “supernova phenomenon” directly related to the current reality. It’s like two voices whispering to each other two versions of the same story.
